"Faith does not get you around problems…
It gets you through them."

Recently a client was featured in the media as a success story of how the combination of psychotherapy and medical support helped her overcome anorexia, a life threatening mental health disorder.

When she first entered therapy her body was shutting down and her family felt consumed with grief. With no other knowledge of how to deal with the painful feelings of the trauma she had experienced she turned to anorexia. Often she and her family would reflect upon how happy their family used to be before the traumatic events occurred. Life was good. Then they were lost as if in a storm at sea. We can learn many lessons about life from the sea.

Life is in constant change. At times you can be sailing your boat upon waters that are smooth as glass with the sun beaming down and gentle winds blowing you along your path. Joy is abundant. You and those you love are healthy and safe. Then you are faced with a difficult passage in your life.

The dark clouds appear and you begin to feel anxious. Suddenly it begins to rain and the waters become turbulent and seem threatening as they rage around you. You are filled with fear wondering what might happen next as you struggle to cope with your feelings of despair. This despair is like a fog that descends upon you and keeps you from seeing the shore. Sadness can be like a fog that consumes us and makes everyday tasks seem impossible. All of your energy is spent just staying afloat rather than seeking the safety of the shore.

However, the sea teaches us that this too can and will change. With constant movement, you will find the path that will lead you out of the muddled confinement of your mind. During difficult times, if you keep your eyes on the distant rainbow, soon the waters will calm and once again you will feel the healing warmth of the sun.

Have faith that when you are facing challenges there is help. We are here to assist in your healing and contribute to your strength as you navigate through the difficult passages in your life.
